Ijaz Butt still believes that sacking former Pakistani cricket captain, Shahid Afridi, was the right decision
Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) chairman, Ijaz Butt, has reiterated that sacking former captain, Shahid Afridi, was the decision, taken after long consultation between officials of the cricket board.
While talking on the matter, the PCB chairman said, “We had very solid reasons to remove Afridi and I will reveal them when the time is right. We haven't taken this action without any reasons".
Butt revealed that there was enough evidence against the all-rounder which left the board with no other option but to sack him.
Rejecting the common criticism that the PCB was wrong to sack a captain who had led Pakistan in a tremendous fashion in the ICC World Cup 2011 and then went on to win the five-match one-day series against West Indies, Butt said, “We know Afridi won two series and that is why we didn't act then [during the tour]. We couldn't do anything more during that tour. Right now anything more I say will cause more tensions. Everything will come to light soon".
Afridi landed in the eye of the storm, revealing to the media that some serious differences had emerged between him and the touring management during the five-match one-day series in West Indies.
According to unknown sources, after winning the series by defeating the hosts in the first three matches, Afridi wanted to give the uncapped players a chance to face the Windies, but the head coach, Waqar Younis, did not back this idea.
It is said that Afridi threatened to pull out from the remainder of the tournament, however, later he played the two matches which the tourists lost.
Afridi was replaced by Test captain, Misbah-ul-Haq, as the new one-day skipper and it is believed that the middle-order batsman will retain this post for another six months or a year and then be replaced by opener, Mohammad Hafeez.
Meanwhile, the appointment of Misbah has received severe criticism from former Pakistani veterans who have argued the logic behind appointing a batsman who probably does not have a long cricket career as a captain and will most likely miss the next world cup in 2015.
